Lexi's my pup and she's 4 1/2 months now. In the Santa (I like to think of it as Mrs. Clause) outfit, she just turned 4 months and in the second one she's probably only 10 weeks old.
Wow! Lexi is just the cutest little girl! If you don't mind my asking where did u get her from and how much bigger will she get? My friend and I are looking @ getting a small dog and just trying to find out info...but omg lexi is such a cutie!
I actually heard a new pet store was opening by my school and since I had time before class, I went over to buy dog toys for my 2 dogs I already have. Well, I didn't even know pet stores still sold dogs (I usually only shop at PetSmart or Pet Food Express) so it kind of shocked me to see two pens with a total of 7 or so dogs in them. I wasn't planning on getting a dog at all and I knew that dogs in pet stores were a definite "no no" since pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills - mass puppy producers that just crank out puppies for profit, not thinking about their physical or mental well-being at all. Usually females are kept in horrible conditions, locked up in cages and bred at each heat cycle with little to no vet care, exercise, mental stimulation, or affection. Although everything in my mind said to just leave her there and not take her home, that day my heart took over and something told me to take her home. I'm not proud of the way I got her at all, I know better than to support puppy mills and pet store owners who get their puppies from them, but this was one situation where my gut just told me this was the right thing for me and for this puppy right now. I love Lexi to death and would do anything for her, but I'm very ashamed that I got her at a pet store. Like I said, I wasn't looking to get a dog at all and I didn't even expect to go to this new pet store which was out of my routine, but for some reason I did and now...here she is.
I was told she was going to be 10-12 pounds fully grown and she is a chihuahua and rat terrier mix. She has a very long body, so I think she might actually be a chi/doxie mix. I think a general rule is to double your dog's weight at 4 months and that's about the weight of the dog fully grown and she was a little over 5 pounds at 4 months so she would be within the 10-12 pound range.
If you're looking for any small dog breed, I highly suggest you look at petfinder.com and search your area, or you can contact your local small dog rescue. If you know a specific breed you like, you can search for those breed specific rescues as well. You can fill out an adoption form and get to know the rescuers and they can contact you when dogs come in and you can meet them and all of you can decide which dog is best for you.
Remember, the perfect dog is always worth the wait - you can have this dog for 10-15+ years, so don't get overly excited with the first dog you meet. When it's right, you'll just know.
