Poodle Dropped From Heaven To Retirement Home

- A bird of prey, which dropped a poodle at a nursing home in British Columbia, may have inadvertently saved the animal's life.
The dog was not in good shape when she was dropped onto the grounds of the Shorncliff Nursing Home, in Sechelt, and it is believed she spent some time as a stray.
The poodle, who had puncture wounds, walked though a door at the home around 5 am.
“It was a little white dog who was terrified and obviously not in very good shape," Nancy Skelcher, a licensed practical nurse, told the Globe and Mail. "She wouldn’t let me pick her up, so I just went and got a towel from the warmer, threw it over top of her and bundled her up."
Skelcher, who had a cat who was attached by a bald eagle about 20 years ago, thought the injuries might have been inflicted by one of the birds.
SPCA Sunshine Coast branch manager Shannon Broderick said the wounds were at least an inch deep.
“In addition to the claw marks on her back and the broken ribs she sustained from the fall, all of her nails were so long they had grown into her paw pads and her teeth were badly decayed," said Broderick in a press release.
"We don’t know how long she had been wandering without care but she was obviously very neglected. It’s ironic, but this bird may have saved her life.”
She, who had no tags and was not microchipped, was taken to Eagleridge Veterinary Hospital for treatment.
"Eagleridge were very generous in treating her but now she needs extensive dental work, which will cost around $4,000," the Vancouver Sun quoted BC SPCA official Lorie Chortyk as saying.
"We're asking for public assistance to pay for the surgery. Sunshine Coast is a small [SPCA] branch and they don't have a lot of resources.
"She needs it because it's hard for her to eat with decaying teeth and this has to be done before we can find her a new home."
The dog, who is believed to be about six years old, was called May because she appeared on May 2.

Stray Dog Breaks Into Animal Shelter

FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- The Fairbanks pooch who broke into the pound is now up for adoption.

The stray has been named Albert. Workers at the animal shelter say the tape from security cameras showed Albert digging under two fences Wednesday night to reach an inner area where sled dogs were tied up.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner quotes the shelter's operations supervisor, Sandy Klimaschesky, on an explanation for the break-in: "He probably heard about what good care animals get here."

Albert is described as a black, tan and white husky mix who wasn't neutered and had no microchip. He weighs 75 pounds, with one brown and one slightly bluish white eye. His age is estimated at 2 years old.

State Farm® paid more than $90 million as a result of the nearly 3,500 dog bite claims in 2010. This is one of the reasons that State Farm recognizes National Dog Bite Prevention Week, sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association during the week of May 15 - 21.

The Insurance Information Institute (III) estimates that in 2009, insurers across the country paid more than $412 million in dog bite claims.

A dog’s tendency to bite depends on such factors as heredity, obedience training, socialization, health, and the victim’s behavior. There are good dogs and bad dogs within every breed, just as there can be responsible and irresponsible owners of each breed. State Farm *does not refuse insurance based on the breed of dog a customer owns but does require policyholders to answer questions about their dogs’ history on a homeowner insurance application.

*The state of Ohio has determined that the pit bull meets the definition of a "vicious dog”.As a result, the owners of pit bulls or any American Staffordshire terrier mix are subject to specific requirements to protect the public from injury by these animals. State Farm does not provide coverage under its homeowner’s policy in the state for this breed of dog.

Children are frequent victims of dog bites. In fact, 60 percent of all dog bite victims are children under the age of 12. Tragically, of the 33 dog bites that resulted in death last year, 20 of these fatalities were young children.

In addition to stressing responsible pet ownership, State Farm encourages responsible behavior and caution around dogs, including family pets. Under the right circumstances, any dog might bite.

NEVER leave a baby or small child alone with a dog.
Be on the lookout for potentially dangerous situations.
Start teaching young children -- including toddlers -- to be careful around pets.
Children must be taught NOT to approach strange dogs.
Always ask permission from a dog's owner before petting any dog.
For more information about dog bite prevention, visit the State Farm Learning Center or the American Veterinary Medical Association.
