Poodle Dropped From Heaven To Retirement Home
- A bird of prey, which dropped a poodle at a nursing home in British Columbia, may have inadvertently saved the animal's life.
The dog was not in good shape when she was dropped onto the grounds of the Shorncliff Nursing Home, in Sechelt, and it is believed she spent some time as a stray.
The poodle, who had puncture wounds, walked though a door at the home around 5 am.
“It was a little white dog who was terrified and obviously not in very good shape," Nancy Skelcher, a licensed practical nurse, told the Globe and Mail. "She wouldn’t let me pick her up, so I just went and got a towel from the warmer, threw it over top of her and bundled her up."
Skelcher, who had a cat who was attached by a bald eagle about 20 years ago, thought the injuries might have been inflicted by one of the birds.
SPCA Sunshine Coast branch manager Shannon Broderick said the wounds were at least an inch deep.
“In addition to the claw marks on her back and the broken ribs she sustained from the fall, all of her nails were so long they had grown into her paw pads and her teeth were badly decayed," said Broderick in a press release.
"We don’t know how long she had been wandering without care but she was obviously very neglected. It’s ironic, but this bird may have saved her life.”
She, who had no tags and was not microchipped, was taken to Eagleridge Veterinary Hospital for treatment.
"Eagleridge were very generous in treating her but now she needs extensive dental work, which will cost around $4,000," the Vancouver Sun quoted BC SPCA official Lorie Chortyk as saying.
"We're asking for public assistance to pay for the surgery. Sunshine Coast is a small [SPCA] branch and they don't have a lot of resources.
"She needs it because it's hard for her to eat with decaying teeth and this has to be done before we can find her a new home."
The dog, who is believed to be about six years old, was called May because she appeared on May 2.
